Truck Bed Bike Carrying Solution for 2020 Toyota Tacoma Short Bed While Towing Camper

Question:

I just purchased a new 2020 Toyota Tacoma SR5 4 door with the 5 ft bed. I have two questions I’m wanting to drive with my tailgate down to load our electric bikes while we rent an Airstream Bambi. Pretty sure when we hook it up in the next few days I will not be able to lower my tailgate and have enough clearance to drive with it down. What extension do you feel would be right for us. I have the tow package with our truck. Also what bike rack would you recommend we will be needing to take off the front wheels of our bikes for them to fit in with the tailgate closed. Thanks

Helpful Expert Reply:

Rather than use an extender which will lower your hitch tongue weight capacity (maximum amount of downward force that can safety be applied to the hitch) by 50%, I'd recommend using a truck tailgate bike carrier like the Softride Shuttle Pad tailgate mounted bike carrier, part # SR26461 which would be perfect for what you're wanting to do. This carrier would allow you to carry up to 6 bikes, without needing to remove the front wheels and would allow you to keep the tailgate closed with no worries about clearance between the tailgate and the camper or anything mounted on the camper's tongue like the jack or propane bottles. The padded vinyl construction will prevent the bikes and the vehicle from being scratched. This is the route I'd take if I were in your position.
