Lighting Solution for Flat Towing a 2010 Volkswagen Passat Behind a Motor Home

Question:

I recently purchased a TowReady TOne Connector pt #118562. My intention in purchasing this product was to use it on my Passat while towing it behing my RV. However, after recieving this item and reading the instructions, it appears that I may have bought the wrong kit unless I can somehow use this kit for that purpose. Is it possible to use this product in that way? Or must I get another item and send this one back?

Your assumptions are correct, the Tekonsha wiring harness, # 118562, is designed for it you were to need to power trailer lights while towing with the 2010 Volkswagen Passat. It cannot be used to power the vehicle lights while it is being towed.

What you can use is a magnetic kit like # RM-2120. This light kit will mount to any flat metal surface on the vehicle, like the trunk lid, and it connects to a 4-Way on the towing vehicle. The benefit is that you do not have to cut into the vehicle wiring and it is easy to install and remove.

Be sure to consult your vehicle owners manual for the proper towing procedure for your Passat. In my research I have found that if you have a 5-speed manual transmission, it can be flat towed. If you have a 6-speed manual, it is not yet known if it is flat towable. And if it is an automatic, it will need to be towed using a dolly. Consult the owners manual to verify this information.
