What Parts are Needed to Flat Tow a 1996 Honda Accord

Question:

My 96 Honda Accord is a fixed front drive that I would like to convert to free wheeling RV tow. Is it reasonable to do this, and what parts would I need to modify front hubs.

I checked with the flat towing authority REMCO and they have the following statement on the 1996 Honda Accord, front wheel drive, manual and automatic: Towable as is. No formal testing. No known problems. Follow Honda procedures found under emergency towing section in the owners manual. Hybrids/CVT transmissions are dolly only.

Be sure to consult your vehicle owners manual to determine if this is correct.

If you determine you can flat tow the vehicle as is you will need base plates. Use # 1523-2 if you have a 4 cylinder. These base plates are XL style and they are compatible with all Roadmaster tow bars.

If you have a 6 cylinder you could use BX2216, and you will need a different tow bar.

For a tow bar the most popular option is the Falcon 2, # RM-520. I have included links to the instructions and a video review for you to view. The next item you will need is a set of safety cables like # RM-643. The coiled designed of these cables helps keep them off of the ground when towing the vehicle.

For lighting I recommend going with the easiest solution, a magnetic light kit # RM-2120. This system just attaches to a flat metal surface on the vehicle and plugs into a 4-Way connector on the RV.

And last most states do now require a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being flat towed. The easiest to set up and use is a proportional Even Brake system, # RM-9400. This system applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the RV is braking which reduces wear and tear on both vehicles.
