Will Using a Trunk Mount Bike Rack Damage the Automatic Trunk Release on a 2012 BMW 5 Series

If I put my trunk bike rack on will it ruin the automatic trunk release system because now the trunk is so heavy?

The Thule Passage 3, # TH911XT, will fit the 2012 BMW 5 series. However, on any vehicle you should not attempt to open the trunk with the bike rack attached because it is not rated for the extra weight and it can also cause the trunk to fall on you. It also affects how the rack attaches to the vehicle.

Provided that you do not attempt to open the trunk with the rack attached it should not have any effect on the trunk release. I have included a link to the installation instructions.

If you will be carrying womens, childrens, or alternative frame bikes, I recommend using the bike adapter bar, # TH982XT, for greater ground clearance and to carry the bikes more level. I have included a link to a video that shows how the adapter works.
