The Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 2 Axles - Proportional # C51180 utilizes an app, so the app will still allow other apps to run simultaneously like maps just one of them will be "running in the background" and the phone will always still be available. In order to use the manual override button you will need to have the Echo app pulled up so the screen is activated for that button use. The brake controller will work with the last setup used without the app even pulled up, you just won't have the manual override option, so if you were to lose battery on your phone you won't lose all trailer braking function and if you accidentally close the app, you will still be fine with normal braking function as well.
