Recommended Trunk Mounted Bike Rack for 2001 Volkswagen Beetle

Question:

Has there been a problem attaching a trunk bike rack to a 2001 beetle? The top straps will be attached to the rear window not metal on the car.

Both Yakima and Thule tell me that there is no problem or issue in using a trunk-mounted rack with a 2001 Beetle.

Yakima recommends placing no more than 2 bikes on the rack, while Thule makes no such prohibition. Since one manufacturer made that recommendation, I would recommend giving it consideration.

Of all the racks that are a confirmed fit, I can highly recommend the Thule OutWay. The OutWay uses only 2 rubber coated straps to secure the bike instead of the 4-6 that other racks use. This system allows the rack to be installed or removed in seconds, which is why the OneWay is one of our top selling bike racks.

To carry women's bikes or bikes with sharply angled top tubes or step-through frames, using a frame adapter like part # TH982XT is recommended. The adapter spans the distance between the seat post and the handle bar gooseneck, and provides a level attachment point to the bike rack so the bike has greater ground clearance and is not carried at an angle.
