Why Does DOT Require Breakaway Battery to Activate Trailer Brakes for 15 Minutes

Question:

Hello, I saw that you posted on a question regarding DOT requirements for breakaway trailers. I was a little confused and wanted a little bit more clarification. The answer states that the trailer brakes must be engaged for 15 minutes. Does this mean 15 minutes straight so if a trailer breaks away, I wont be able to move it for 15 minutes? Thank you

That is correct. The DOT requires that a breakaway battery kit, like the Pro Series # 50-85-315, be able to activate the trailer brakes for 15 continuous minutes.

A breakaway battery is used more or less as a last resort to help minimize the effects of a disaster on the highway. If you are towing correctly then the only time that a trailer SHOULD come uncoupled is in the event of an accident. Otherwise the coupler should remain attached to the hitch ball, and it that disconnects then the safety chains should catch the tongue of the trailer (if you crossed the chains like you should) so you can stop without the trailer dragging behind you. If you don't notice that the trailer is uncoupled, or the safety chains were to snap for some reason, then the plunger would be pulled and the trailer brakes would be activated.

In all reality if the trailer became disconnected you probably wouldn't be back on the road within 15 minutes anyways.
