The Curt # C51180 Echo is actually the perfect controller for this purpose, as the installation is completely plug and play assuming that the truck is set up properly. As long as the rental truck has a fully functioning 7-way trailer connector and the trailer itself has 4 or fewer brake assemblies, it'll work perfectly. When renting the truck, I'd make sure that the 7-way pin in the 1:00 position that provides 12-volt power to the trailer is functional, as this is what powers the brake controller. They should be willing to test that in your presence.
