What Tail Light Wiring Kit is Needed When Flat Towing a 2012 Toyota Tacoma

Question:

The roadmaster chart says this wiring can be used on my 2012 Tacoma, I looked inside the tail light housing and I am not sure how this would work?

The RoadMaster Tail Light Wiring Kit with Bulbs, part # RM-155, will require you to drill a 1-inch hole in the back of the taillight housing right under the red lens. It uses the standard #1157 bulb which measures 1.83 inches tall and .97 inches width of the bulb. The sockets measures .95 inches where it goes into the lens.

The instructions show to drill a 1 inch hole in the taillight housing beneath a red lens to fit the socket and to make sure once the bulb is inserted in the socket it has 1/4 inch clearance from the top of the bulb to the lens.

Also, when drilling the hole in your taillight housing it is better to use a 1 inch hole saw. instead of a drill bit so there will be less chance of any damage to the wires or housing.

The RoadMaster chart does say the # RM-155 has room to be installed on a 2012 Toyota Tacoma.

Your other option would be to use the RoadMaster Diode Wiring Kit, part # RM-154. This wiring kit would have to be wired with diodes to your tail lights. With this kit, the vehicle brake lights will function as both brake and turn lights. A wiring converter (# 118158) and 2 additional diodes (# RM-792) will be needed if you want to retain separate turn and brake signals.

I am including a link to a video of this wiring kit being installed on a vehicle. The vehicle is different , but the wiring principle is the same.

If you do not plan on towing the vehicle often, you can use a light kit like the Magnetic Towing Light Kit, part # RM-2120.
