How To Determine If Trailer Brake Controller Can Be Used On Triple Axle Trailer

Question:

I am working on my triple axle trailer brakes and wanted to make sure my brake controller is sized right for the job. What is the current output requirement for these brake magnets? I do not have original info from my 2004 trailer as I bought it secondhand. If I know what one magnets requirement is, I can multiply by 6 and check the plug with a DC amp meter. The brake controller manufacturer should be able to tell you the maximum number of braking assemblies that can be used. That said, generally speaking that is brake magnets for a 12" assembly will draw around 4 amps per magnet at full power. For a triple axle trailer, the brake controller would need to put out at least 24 amps.

If the brake controller you have now will not handle the load of your triple axle trailer, we know the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90195 will and it is an excellent option, one of the best on the market actually.
