Recommendations for Weight Distribution on a Boat Trailer with Surge Brakes
Question:
Im towing a C-Dory 25 on a tandem axle EZ Loader trailer rated at 8,500 lbs. The trailer has a surge break, so Im not sure if a weight distribution system would even work with a surge brake my fear is that it slows down the break activation. What would be your recommendations on this? The tow vehicle is a 2015 GMC heavy duty 3/4 ton with a 2.5 hitch. Enclosed is a photo of the hitch and trailer spec plate.

What a cool looking boat!! I have a solution for you, but the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control is not recommended for use with surge brakes.
Instead, for a similar rated system that would be compatible you would want the Reese SC Weight Distribution system part # RP66560. This system has a tongue weight range of 600 lbs - 1,200 lbs. It utilizes fully sliding trunnion bars which can move forward when you need the brakes applied through the surge coupler then return to its original position when accelerating.
The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use.
It is hard for me to tell on the photos so keep in mind that the brackets for this system need to be installed somewhere from 27"-32" behind the center of your coupler if your trailer does not a frame out at that point you want to add a Reese Pole-Tongue Adapter part # RP58393 which is rated for use up to 1400 lbs. tongue weight and 14000 lbs trailer weight.
I've also included videos below on each of the recommendations. Enjoy the water!!
