Question:
How do I know if I have a smart battery, and if I do, will this not work as I was instructed

I believe you are talking about a smart alternator and from my understanding your 2019 Ram ProMaster 1500 shouldn't have one so you'll be good to use the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger # 331-BCDC1240D with the Redarc Smart Start Load Disconnect # 331-SBI12-LLD.
A normal alternator has a constant output of the same amount of power while a smart alternator can vary the power output depending on what the vehicle demands. Typically these are found on economy or high-end cars but there isn't an exact science behind knowing right off-hand whether you have one or not. Usually you'll have to reach out to your local dealer for that info, but I would be surprised if your ProMaster has one. You can use the following steps to help you determine this as well:
1. Locate your main vehicle battery
2. Start the engine, ensuring any fans, radio, lights etc. are turned off.
3. Take a voltage reading across the main vehicle battery
4. Leave running for around 5/10 minutes, then repeat step 3
If your readings are around 14.4V DC then then you most likely have the traditional, non-smart alternator.
If your reading is closer to 12.5-13.5V then it’s likely that you have a smart alternator.
If you were to have a smart alternator then you need the Relay Kit # 331-RK1260 and you can use the attached diagram and instructions for your installation.
