Weight of Rola Roof Rack that Fits 2010 Ford Edge

Question:

Thanks, but I had intended to secure the kayak directly to the crossbars unless it really feels unsafe. Is the kayak rack really necessary? I'd prefer to save myself the $170 and really don't feel that a curved piece of metal is much safer than heavy duty tie downs.

The Rola roof rack part number 59770 that you referenced weighs right at 9 lbs. This is a confirmed fit for your 2010 Ford Edge with a naked roof as well. I'd go with a the 75 lb kayak though as you also need to factor in the weight of the carrier you would decide to mount on the rack as well.

For a carrier the Thule Hull a Port part # TH834 is a really great option too. It only weighs 9 lbs as well so it would fit in with the weight capacity you have and is easier to install and load than other similar options. I attached a review video for more info on this as well.

A kayak rack is a really good idea to keep the kayak on the roof rack. We have better priced options like the foam block style part # MPG152 with the strap kit # E98876-2 as well. Since kayaks don't have a flat bottom they typically are best to load in a carrier that matches the contour of the boat.
