So what SHOULD display on the screen with a trailer connected and the brakes pressed? I’m only getting a decimal in this case.

When the trailer is connected and the brake is depressed the Draw-Tite Activator IV Trailer Brake Controller part # 5504. If the trailer is connected, the brake pedal is depressed and you have set the gain you will see a "2 o" on the display screen. I have attached a snip from the instructions that explains what that looks like. If you are only seeing a decimal the brake controller may not sense the trailer is connected. First check your trailer connector to make sure it has a good connection with the trailer. Check that the pins are not bent or rusted. If they are you can lightly sand them with a fine sand paper.
If you are still having issues and your brake controller is hardwired then the blue wire does not have a proper connection. I recommend to inspect the blue wire for damage or frayed wires back to the 7-Way. If you use a circuit tester at the brake output circuit of your 7-way connector and do not get power when the brake is depressed or the manual override of the brake controller is activated then you know the brake output circuit is the issue.
