Should Steering Wheel of Vehicle Towed with Tow Dolly be Locked Or Unlocked

Question:

I have a 2006 Mini Cooper that I want to tow behind a RV with a dollie. The steering wheel needs to be in a unlocked position. Can this be done with the ignition off? Or will I have to disconnect my battery?

Actually it's not recommended to have the steering wheel of a vehicle unlocked that's being towed on a tow dolly. This would allow the dolly to damage the sides of the vehicle around corners since it would pivot underneath the vehicle. Having the steering wheel locked allows the dolly to stay parallel with the direction of the vehicle and prevent this. A dolly like the # RM-2050-1 has a steering axle which is what does the turning as you make the tight turns.
