How To Replace Worn Out Flat Leaf Springs

Question:

I need to replace the four leaf springs on my car trailer. The current springs were overloaded and flattened over time by the previous owner. They have lost most of the arch they should have, and the axles ride nearly on the frame. I looked at your guide to measure springs and it said to measure eye to eye and then spring height. But with my springs so worn out, will these measurements be accurate?

Helpful Expert Reply:

I normal amount of sag in a worn out leaf spring is about 3/4" but it sounds like yours are completely worn out and flat. I recommend to measure from one hanger to the other hanger for the length of your spring. If you let me know that measurement and the axle capacity I can figure out the length of spring you need.

Thank you, Heather. I finally got around to looking closer at my trailer with your advice in mind. I was able to determine exactly what springs I needed, and I've placed my order.
