My bmx bike does not fit on it. why is this?

There could be several reasons why a bike will not fit on a rack. If the top tube on the bike frame is not long enough to fit between the arms of the rack, it will not fit. The arms on the Swagman Trailhead are 11-1/2 inches long. If the frame is an alternative shape and not round, the bike may not fit in the cradles properly.

What you can do is use the Easy-Out adapter, # 64005. One end clamps on the handle bar stem and the other end clamps around the seat post below the seat. The adapter provides a round frame to fit on the bike rack like in the video I have linked.

If you can tell me what is preventing the bike from fitting on the rack, I can make more specific suggestions.
