What is Big Advantage to Tandem Axle Trailer Over Single Axle Trailer
Question:
HI - I have a short flat bed trailer 12 ft bed with tandem axles. It is a bit over built with 6 x2 main frame channel iron and 4 x 2 supports. It weights in at 1700 lb empty. My question is - It currently has mobile home axles and brakes that need to switched out. I am considering the Timbren axle kit and going to one 7000 lb axle instead of two 3500 lb axles - The most I haul in it is about 2 tons of hay. Am I crazy to go to one 7000 lb axle instead of two 3500 lb axles?

Tandem axle trailers have advantages, but I wouldn't say you're crazy to go to a single 7k Timbren setup like the # TASR7KS01. I would say your ideal setup would be two Timbren 3,500 axles like # ASR3500S05 though as tandem axles have the advantage of extra wheels so in the event of a tire blow out your trailer is much safer when coming to a stop. Which is something you might consider when trailer is loaded with hay. Which from personal experience I know can fall if not secured really well.
