Based on my research, your 1987 Jeep Cherokee Laredo should be able to be flat towed behind a motorhome. The only reason I say "should" is because it looks like there were certain Cherokees within the 1987 model year that came with "odd' transfer cases. In this case the driveshaft would need to be disconnected. Most of the 1987 Jeep Cherokees though can be flat towed by simply putting them in neutral.
There's not an easy way to determine which transfer case you have, so my best recommendation is to contact at local Jeep dealer with your VIN and they should be able to determine this.
In order to flat tow your Jeep you will need a base plate kit, a tow bar, safety cables, a lighting solution, and a supplemental braking system. I will quickly list out my specific recommendations below and then go into more detail on each further down.
Base Plate Kit - Roadmaster Crossbar-Style # 1401-1
Tow Bar - Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain # RM-522
Safety Cables - Roadmaster Single Hook # RM-645
Lighting Solution - Optronics Heavy Duty Magnetic Tow Lights # TL21RK
Supplemental Braking System - Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR
The Roadmaster Crossbar-Style Base Plate Kit is specifically designed for your Jeep and its hidden-bracket setup allows you to maintain a clean appearance when not towing. The base plate arms will hook up to the Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain Tow Bar without issue and the Falcon's non-binding deign allows for easy release, even when you're on unlevel ground.
The Optronics Magnetic Tow Lights provides you with the needed signal lights during travel without having to actually splice into the Jeep's factory wiring. The Blue Ox Patriot will give you extremely reliable braking by physically pressing down on the Jeep's brake pedal in proportion to your braking in the RV. Its simple to setup and it offers really nice portability that allows it to quickly be removed when the trip is over.
I have attached a few short video reviews on these products that you can check out as well.
