How to Determine What Hubs Fit Axle and if Larger Tires Fit Trailer

Question:

I would like to modify this trailer so I could put 4.80-12 wheels and tires to replace the 8 inch tires. Is that Possible? What would I need to do this? I can move the fenders, that shouldnt be a problem. Are there hubs that would fit this axle? Thanks

So, it may be possible to put on larger tires, but there are a few things that you need to know, starting with the hubs that fit, and there are some things that you need to do, starting by measuring your spindle to find out of there are hubs that fit that support larger 12-inch tires. To do this, you will need to take apart your hub assembly and look at the bearings themselves; wipe away the grease and you should be able to see the part number stamped directly on them. If you are unable to find them, you need to use digital caliper and measure your spindle to the thousandths of an inch where the bearings ride. You can use the photo I've attached to see exactly where you need to measure.

In regard to the other issue with tires, it is important to ensure you have the right amount of clearance. With trailer tires, the general rule of thumb is you want at least 3" of clearance from the top of the tire to your fender and at least 1" of clearance between the inside of the tire and your trailer's frame rail.

I have added links to our entire selection of 4.80-12 tire and wheel combos, as well as our selection of hubs. Additionally, I have added links to a number of help articles on trailer tires, hubs and bearings which I strongly recommend taking a look at.
