To recommend a hitch bike rack I would need to know how many bikes and the weight and types of bikes you want to transport.
A bike rack you might want to start with would be the Thule Apex 2 Bike Carrier, part # TH9024XT. This is one of the newest models from Thule and can carry 2 bikes and has a maximum weight capacity of 70 lbs. It will install into either a 1-1/4 inch hitch and a 2 inch hitch. I am including a link to a video review of the # TH9024XT bike rack that will describe many of its features.
If you need a 3 bike rack I would recommend the Thule Helium 3 Bike Carrier, part # TH9043PRO. This is a lightweight 3 bike rack with a weight capacity of 105 lbs. It will also install on either a 1-1/4 inch hitch or a 2 inch hitch.
If you are going to be carrying womens or childrens bikes that do not have the horizontal bar at the top of the frame, you will want to use the Thule Bike Adapter Bar, part # TH982XT. It attaches to the center seat post and to the handlebar post and provides a horizontal bar, so the bike can ride level on the bike rack. I have included a link to a video demonstrating how the adapter works.
I am including a link to a FAQ page on how to choose a hitch bike rack. It might help you narrow down the features you might want in a hitch bike rack.
If you are needing a hitch for your 2008 BMW X3 I would recommend the Draw-Tite Class III 2-Inch Hitch, part # 75371. This hitch will have a tongue weight capacity of 350 lbs, which will allow you to install most sizes of hitch bike racks.
