Can I Use Higher Rated Leaf Springs On Grand Design Trailer

Question:

I have a 2018 Grand Design Imagine 2150RB and I am being sent two replacement axles from Dexter. They are sending two 3 inch 3500lb axles with 1750lb springs vs the current 2 3/8 inch 3500lb axles with 1750lb springs. The current springs, as well as the new axle springs have 4 leaves, plus I already have the Dexter E-Z flex equalizers. I’m thinking I should upgrade the 1750lb springs before I install the axles. Etrailer has both the e57SR 2000lb, 3 leafs and the Universal SP-218275 2500lb, 4 leafs. Is there a rule of thumb for how much you should increase the spring rating so I have a stronger spring without creating a harsh ride? I understand that I will not be increasing my load capacity, as my GVWR will still be 6695lb based on the axles, wheels and tires. Thanks

Thank you for all of the very helpful information Kevin. Let me start by saying the amount of leafs isn't as important as the capacity the actual spring is rated for. We have single leaf springs that are rated higher than some 4 leaf springs so it is not an accurate measurement to go by.

So what really matters is the length measurement of your existing springs center of eye to center of eye and the capacity of the spring. With that said, you may use a higher rated spring like the etrailer.com spring part # e57SR as long as your existing spring measures 25-1/4" center of spring to center of spring eye. This will give you a slightly stiffer suspension compared to the 1750 lb springs. I do not recommend to go up any higher than that to avoid a stiff ride however there is not really a rule of thumb.
