How to Get Tailgate to Clear Trailer Jack While Hauling ATV in Bed of 2017 Ram 1500
Question:
I have a 2017 Ram 1500 that is capable of towing 8000 lbs. I am buying a 2020 Coachmen 248 rbs which weighs 5500. I want to put my atv in the bed of my truck which weigh about 650. I plan on purchasing the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w Sway Control - Trunnion Bar - 12,000 lbs GTW, 1,200 lbs TW # RP66084. The issue I am having is the tailgate needs to be open to fit my atv. I need a hitch extension so it will clear the trailer. The blue ox 12inch extender seems like the answer but it says not to tow a trailer with it and cuts the tongue weight in half. What is the solution?

I do have a solution that will allow you to use the weight distribution system Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control # RP66084 and have your ATV in the bed of your 2017 Ram 1500 with the tailgate open. You can use Curt Weight Distribution Shank # C17122. It will replace the shank that comes with the weight distribution but will give you the additional clearance you need, without sacrificing strength or reducing the capacity.
You are correct, whenever you use an adapter it reduces the capacity of the hitch. Without knowing what the exact ratings of your hitch are, I based it off the 8000 lbs rating you gave me. If an extender were used that would cut the weight capacity to 4000 lbs and your new Coachmen weighs more than that already, not to mention you would be limited to using an extender that is rated for weight distribution. The longer replacement shank is definitely the way to go.
Being able to tow with your tailgate down is nice when you want to take your 4 wheeler with you camping, but you probably have seen all the tailgates with dings from hitting the jack, and no one wants that. I attached a photo that a customer sent in showing the tailgate down on his Ram hooked up with the Curt shank. A lot of customers use this shank for that exact reason.
You can check out the weight distribution and shank with the included links and videos. Enjoy your new camper and happy towing!
