The Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller - Wireless part # C51180 does connect to your phone via Blue tooth connection which does not require cell service or WIFI so you will not have any issues with the Echo in rural areas. In the unlikely event your phone would lose connection to the Echo it retains the settings and would still function too. The only time you need WIFI or service is when you download the Curt app during the setup.
The Curt Echo is compatible with an Apple: IOS 8.0-newer or Android: 4.4-newer.
