Under most circumstances yes you will need to use a slider hitch to tow a fifth wheel trailer with your 2017 Ram 2500 with a 6-1/2 foot bed as typically there isn't enough clearance to make tight turns without sliding the hitch back. However, if the trailer has a tapered nose to help with turning clearance for short bed trucks (several newer trailers feature this) or if the trailer has a pivoting pin box like a Sidewinder, Reese Revolution, Lippert Turning Point, etc. then a fixed hitch would be just fine.
So most likely you'd need a slider hitch like the Companion part # BWRVK3400 for your 2017 Ram 2500 short bed without the OEM prep package. But if instead you could use a fixed hitch we have the fixed version # BWRVK3500. Either way the custom rail kit you need for this truck is the part # BWGNRK1384.
