Trailer Wiring Harness and Brake Controller Recommendation for 2019 Toyota Highlander
Question:
I have a 2019 Highlander, and I'm wanting to add a 7-way trailer connector. What parts do I need?

For starters, you'll need to install a functioning 4-pole trailer connector using part # 118449. How you proceed from there depends on whether your trailer has electric brakes or not. If the trailer doesn't have brakes, you can simply use the # 37185 adapter. Plug the adapter into the 4 pole you just installed and ground the white wire to the vehicle frame. The rest of the wires aren't needed and can be bundled up out of the way.
If the trailer does have brakes, you'll need a brake controller to actuate them. I'd recommend the Curt Echo, part # C51180. The echos operates wirelessly, and uses your iOS or Android smartphone as the controls. To install, you'd need the # ETBC7L install kit. You won't need to drill any holes in the dash or have an ugly box hanging down from under the dash for you to hit your knee on.
I've linked you to an install video for the wiring harness I recommended plus a video featuring the brake controller and the installation kit.
