Adapting 4-Pole Trailer Connector 2006 Ford F150 for Towing Boat Trailer w/ Hydraulic Surge Coupler

Question:

I just purchased a new boat with a new Shorelandr trailer. Trailer is equipped with surge brakes and has a 7 way plug. My truck is a 2006 f150 with a four way flat. I am pretty sure with surge brakes i do not need an electric controller, but my question is what do i need to adapt the truck to the trailer? Will a 7 way to four way flat adapter work and still deactivate the brakes when I backup? Or do i need the adapter and to do some extra wiring to deactivate brakes for reverse. Thank you.

I'd recommend installing a 7-way connector on your truck. This can easily be done using an adapter, part # 37185. Mount the adapter using the included mounting bracket, and plug the 4 pin connector from the truck into the 4 pin on the adapter. ground the white wire with the ring terminal to the truck frame and tap the purple wire from the adapter into the reverse lamp circuit. You can find that circuit in the wiring harness feeding the truck's taillights using a circuit tester like the # PTW2993 we offer. The correct wire will go hot with the vehicle in reverse. The blue and black wires on the adapter won't be needed, you can simply tape those up and tuck them up out of the way. You will not need a brake controller.
