No Trailer Running Lights On a 2016 Ram 1500

Question:

My clearance lights on my trailer will not work. My brake and turn signal lights work properly. I have replaced F29 fuse in my fuse box, only to find that the fuse I removed is not blown. To a previous identical problem, you responded to check the 10:00 pin in the 7-pin for 12 volts when the clearance lights are on. Why the 10:00 pin? All wiring diagrams I’ve seen put the put the BROWN “tail light” wire on the #7 center pin.

Expert Reply:

The trailer running or clearance light pin on a trailer connector which is usually carried out by a brown wire is indeed in the 10 o'clock position which you can see in the attached photo. If this pin has power which you can determine by using a circuit tester then you know the issue is on the trailer but if this pin does not have power then you know the issue is on the vehicle. The ground for each trailer connector will need to be checked regardless but if the issue is on the vehicle then don't forget to check the relay as well as the fuse but worse case you need to start tracing wires on either the vehicle or trailer.
