Is a 7-Way Needed For Trailer Brake When Towing With a 2016 Honda Odyssey

Question:

I have a 2016 Honda Odyssey and plan on towing a 6x10 enclosed cargo trailer from OK to PA. I have already installed an ATC and hitch as well as purchased an replacement axle for my trailer TK 3.5k axle with preinstalled electric brakes. Now I need a brake controller and wiring. I am confused about whether I need 4 way or 7 way. I have a four way harness not installed yet but I thought I needed a 7 way for brakes? Please help!

Correct, you will need to use a 7-way trailer connector in order to tow a trailer with brakes. The 4-way trailer connector simply does not have the extra pins needed for the trailer brake and battery charge circuits. The good news is that it is super easy to install a 7-way and brake controller on a 2016 Honda Odyssey thanks to the invention of wireless brake controllers that eliminate the need to splice into the vehicles wiring or run a bunch of wires from the cab to the battery.

I recommend the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation part # ETBC7L with the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180. This option as stated does not require any splicing and all you will need to do is plug the two 4-ways into one another, ground the white wire, and then run the black wire up to the vehicle's battery. The Curt Echo uses your phone so the learning curve is not nearly as high as other options.
