Why Are Some Bike Racks Not Rated For Use on RV or Trailer and Option for Rack on a Trailer

Question:

The Rockymounts Splitrail LS 2 bike is not identified as not suitable for camping, fifth wheel trailers and/or RV. Is the reason that they are not designed for bumper mounting or the potential bounce at the rear of the trailer. My trailer has a 2 inch hitch receiver. Would this rack work with my setup?

That's a good question and while we have bike racks that can be used on a trailer, you hit the mark when you mentioned "bounce" as the reason that some bike racks like the RockyMounts SplitRail are not rated for use behind an RV or trailer. The bike rack manufacturer decided this particular rack is in more danger of potential damage on a trailer because there is significantly more movement at the rear of a fifth wheel trailer or camper than there is at the rear of a passenger car.

So while the rack you mentioned is not rated for use behind a trailer, we do have the perfect option with the Swagman E-Spec # S94FR.

The SplitRail has a large per-bike capacities of 60 lbs per bike, so it seems like you need a rack with an equally large capacity and the E-Spec is a 2-bike rack with a 70 lb per bike capacity and fits in a 2" hitch. It is rated for use behind a trailer due to its heavy-duty steel construction and hefty 60 lb weight, which is what protects it from any type of damage when being used on a trailer.

The manufacturer, Swagman, is highly regarded for making quality bike racks, and they are so confident in the performance of the E-Spec that it even comes with a lifetime warranty.

I have added links to a couple video reviews for you to check out as well of the Swagman E-Spec # S94FR.
