The heating element for your water heater, like the Diamond # DGR6P2PB, is essentially what heats the water inside the tank. A sign of a bad element would simply be cold water when you want it warm/hot. A bad heating element shouldn't cause any type of overflow/backflow issues through the valve like what you described.
If you are having issues like this you will want to check the valves themselves to make sure they are in good condition and don't need to be serviced.
