How To Replace a 5-Way Trailer Connector with 8 Wires Using a 7-Way Trailer Connector  

Question:

i have a 5-way 8 wire plug on my boat trailer. i use a 5-way to 7 round adapter for my truck 2014 Silverado. my 5way plug is showing its age and just want to change it out to a 7 round plug. which 7 way do i buy and how to wire it up.

I am not very familiar with a 5-way trailer connector that has 8 wires like what you have now but it should not be too much work to change this out. I would not be able to give a function for each wire so what you will need to do is apply a 12 volt charge from a battery to see which light illuminates. This will then let you know the functions so you can attach them to the 7-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector - 3' Long # H20042.

The brown wire with yellow stripe likely has the same function as the brown wire with green stripe. These should both be for the running light circuit. The yellow wire is likely for left stop/turn and the green wire is likely for right stop/turn but you will need to test the rest.
