Can I Use A Larger Diameter Axle As A Replacement

Question:

How important is the outer dimension of a trailer axle. I just purchased a replacement axle for my trailer 72/58 3500 lb and noticed that the new axle has an outer tube dimension of 2 3/8inch while the original is 1 3/4. You state that the important dimensions of the hub and spring spacing but dont mention the tube diameter. Is it OK to install an axle with a slightly larger diameter replacement?

Expert Reply:

You can install an axle with a larger diameter as long as you have the clearance between the axle and the trailer frame. We usually recommend a bump clearance of 2" between the axle and the frame. You would also need to purchase larger U-bolts for your suspension system.
