Installing Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller on 2005 Nissan Pathfinder with Factory 4-Way

Question:

I wanted to know if I can do this my self...someplace wants to charge me 750.00 because they said my truck does not have the 7 way. But they only looked at the 4 pin connector on the back and did not check anything else. I am kinda handy and was wondering if I can get parts that connect together or does it really need to be rewired? just trying not to over pay.

We have all the parts needed to install the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller # 90885 on your 2005 Nissan Pathfinder that's equipped with the factory 4-Way, but it will indeed require just a bit of hardwiring. If you are even a little bit comfortable with wiring it's definitely something you can do yourself (saving the $750 for something more fun).

If nothing else you can take a look at the parts needed, which I will map out below, along with the attached videos to see if it's something you feel like tackling.

First, to upgrade the 4-Way to a fully functional 7-Way connector at the bumper you will use the Wiring Kit # ETBC7. The main 7-Way harness simply gets plugged into the existing 4-Way, providing you with a 7-Way at the other end. Then there's a bare black wire, blue wire, white wire, and yellow wire coming from the harness. The white wire simply gets attached to the Pathfinder's metal frame for ground and unless your trailer has reverse lights (most don't) the yellow wire can just get capped off as it's not needed.

This leaves just the blue and black wires that need to be ran up the vehicle to the battery (and then to the brake controller) for brake output and 12V power. I have attached a complete wiring diagram that may clarify these connections along with a video overview that you can take a look at as well.

The Prodigy P2 will then need to be hardwired under the dash in the cab to the black (12V) and blue (brake output) wires you ran, as well as to the cold side of the brake light switch behind the brake pedal (red wire on the P2). This is the wire that only receives power when the brake pedal is depressed, and no power with any other function. You will want to use the circuit tester included with the Wiring Kit to test for the correct wire.
