How to Drain Valtera RP800 Rocket Hand Pump to Winterize

Question:

Hello, does the pump have a position on the handle that allows it to loose prime and let the water drain back into the tank so the valve body doesnt freeze. We are looking for a pump that doesnt need to be winterized while we are out for a hike or driving down the road in a truck camper. Thanks

The Valterra Rocket Hand Pump # RP800 is designed to do exactly what you need.

At first, priming the pump by rotating the handle several times creates suction, forcing the water up and eventually out. However, only a small amount of water will come out each time you pull the handle forward, unlike a regular faucet with continuous water flow.

You can turn the handle back to lock the prime which basically retains the water pressure already generated so you don't have to prime it time and time again when using it often.

To winterize, pull the handle forward and leave it in this position. This will release the pressure and allow the water to drain back down and into your water tank.

Purchased this pump, Valterra rp800 it says very clearly that pulling the lever into the drain position will drain the pump - but it doesn’t. The pump stays full of water. I was hoping to use this in cold weather but seeing as the body is full of water all the time it will freeze. Do I have a defective one or is the drain function just a full on lie?

The Valterra Rocket Hand Pump - Chrome Finish # RP800 should drain when left in the forward position. It sounds like you have a defective product because it is made specifically for what you are seeking. It sounds like the piston inside isn't fully releasing because it shouldn't hold water with that lever in the forward position. The back position should hold the prime but forward should release all water.
