Left Side Self Adjusting Brake Assembly For A 2017 Sportsmen Classic 180tht Single Axle Trailer
Question:
I’m having problems with one of my hubs getting hot. The bearings were already packed and that didn’t solve my issue. Someone suggested replacing the brake assembly. But I have no idea what size to order. I need the assembly for the left hand side on a 2017 Sportsmen Classic 180tht single axle. I am including pictures of the plate on the axle and the bolt pattern of the wheel. The tires are 15” tires. Thanks!

If it feels like the hubs are getting too hot, one item to check is if the spindle nut is too tight and the added stress on the bearings is overheating the bearings and hub that could cause damage to the bearings. I have attached a video of our technician installing a hub on a trailer and how the spindle nut should be tightened to prevent over heating. At the 1 minute and 45 second mark you can see the hub installation.
You also will want to try adjusting your brakes since it's possible they are grabbing and creating some of the heat issue. You should adjust the brakes so that you cannot turn the hub easily by hand and then back them off about 10 clicks or so until the brakes drag just slightly on the brake drum. Do this on all four axles and your brakes should them work evenly and should stop properly.
If you go the route of replacing the brake assembly, from your label we can determine this is a 5,200lb axle. I recommend the Electric Trailer Brake Assembly - Self-Adjusting - 12" - Left Hand - 5,200 lbs to 7,000 lbs Item # AKEBRK-7L-SA as a quality brake assembly that serves many customers well.
Included are also review and installation videos for additional detail.
