Will Overrated Slipper Springs Cause Rigid Ride

Question:

I now have 30 in 4-leaf springs on my small trailer. Whole rig weighs around 1000 pounds.Ride is very rigid. feel every little bump. It would seem more appropriate for me to have maybe the 2 leaf 900 pound. what do you recommend?

Expert Reply:

The 30" 2-Leaf Slipper Spring for 1,800-lb Trailer Axles # e29SR may well improve your ride, it just depends on what your axle is rated for and what your current springs are rated for, though it seems likely a 4-leaf spring is rated for more than you need. Ideally you are going to want your springs to be rated the same as your axle, or as close as possible without going under.

The 30" # e29SR you referenced have an 1,800 lb axle capacity (900 lbs per spring), which is the lightest for this length, and if they have a capacity less than your current springs, you will see an improved ride.

I have added a link to a help article on slipper spring suspension which I recommend taking a look at.
