The Draw-Tite Activator IV Trailer Brake Controller # 5504 is a time-delayed unit so it should always send back the same amount of power to the trailer brakes every single you time you step on the brake pedal in your tow vehicle, regardless of how fast you're traveling or how hard you press down on the pedal. The fact that it's only working to power the trailer brakes some of the time is concerning.

The Activator IV should also be sending power back to the brakes for as long as you hold the brake pedal down.

To start the troubleshooting process I recommend inspecting both the trailer and tow vehicle side connectors. Look for any debris or corrosion built up around the pins, cleaning out as needed. It could be some corrosion that's preventing a solid connection between the trailer and tow vehicle, specifically the brake output pin, and it's causing the sporadic operation you're experiencing.

If the connectors look good or cleaning them out doesn't resolve the issue you will want to take a look at the brake controller itself. Make sure its red wire is still securely attached to the brake input (brake switch) wire behind the brake pedal of your vehicle. Verify that the wiring is still in good condition and that there aren't any pinched or exposed portions that need to be replaced/repaired.

Please just let me know what you find and we can continue to troubleshoot if the problem persists.
