Does Roadmaster Even Brake RM-9400 Require Brake Light Relay Installed in 1999 Jeep Cherokee
Question:
Im installing an evenbrake 9400 on a 1999 Jeep Cherokee and using magnetic tow lights. Install instructions indicate the brake light relay is not required. However I get an error message that the relay is missing. Is there another setting Im missing?

I checked with Roadmaster and they told me that since your vehicle brakes will be applied with the Even Brake # RM-9400 you do still have to run a brake light relay even though you are using magnetic lights. They checked their fitguide info for your 1999 Jeep Cherokee and stated that regardless of the tow bar lighting solution the relay is needed part # RM-88400. Here's what they emailed:
The brake light relay is not required if your vehicle is using a secondary brake light switch. In your case according to my fitment chart for the 1999 Jeep Cherokee you do need a brake light relay to prevent your OEM brake light switch from overriding your brake and turn signals when the supplemental brake system pushes on the brake pedal. Because the Jeep is using your motor homes 12v brake and turn signals and when the pedal in your Jeep is pushed it will send an additional 12v signal that will override the others and cancel out any turns or brake. so it is advisable to install a brake light relay part number # RM-88400. This will get tied to the cold side of your OEM brake light switch which the wire color for that will be white with a tan stripe.
