The Roadmaster base plates, # 920-1, will fit the 2012 Subaru Outback Wagon. But, if you have an automatic all-wheel drive model, you can only tow the vehicle on a trailer. Make sure to consult your owners manual to determine the specifics on how the vehicle should be towed. The base plates will install very similar on a 2012 as they do on a 2011. All manual transmission models can be flat towed.
If you find that you can flat tow your Subaru, you will need a few more items. You will need a tow bar that is compatible with XL style base plates. For a compatible tow bar, I recommend the Falcon 2, # RM-520. This is the most popular tow bar for XL style base plates. I have included a link to the installation details and a video review for you. For safety cables, go with the Coiled Cables, # RM-643. The coiled design will help keep the cables from touching the ground.
For lighting, I recommend the bulb and socket kit, # RM-155, because you will not have to cut into the vehicle wiring for installation. This system has separate bulbs that will fit in the vehicle tail light housing and be operated by the towing vehicle trailer connector.
Most states now require a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being towed. The easiest system to set up and use is the Roadmaster Even Brake, # RM-9400. This is a proportional system that applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the towing vehicle is braking. Proportional systems are the safest way to stop and reduce wear and tear on both vehicles.
I have also included a link to our series of FAQ articles on flat towing.
