Why Does Weight Behind The Rear Axle Make A Difference When Choosing Weight Distribution

Question:

Your explanation on tongue weight doesn’t sound logical to me. Why does anything behind the rear axle count as tongue weight. example truck camper I thought tongue weight was weight mounted to receiver hitch not cargo in the bed of the truck. Curious??

Expert Reply:

The weight behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle does affect the tongue weight when using a weight distribution system because it is a force on the spring bars of the set up. The weight behind the rear axle does not really affect towing unless you are using a weight distribution system with spring bars. The springs bars are created to even out the sag of the vehicle so you want to make sure you are taking into consideration the weight of the rear of the vehicle as well.

For example: The Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control part # EQ37120ET has a tongue weight rating of 800 lbs - 1,200 lbs. This system would be ideal for trailers that have a loaded tongue weight plus the weight behind the rear axle that falls in the center of the range that the weight distribution system is rated for. I have attached a helpful weight distribution article for your reference.
