Locking Kayak Carrier Availability for a 2012 Subaru Outback With a Factory Roof Rack

Question:

We just bought a 2012 Subaru Outback with factory roof rack. Will this carrier fit ok? What prevents a thief from stealing the carrier off the roof while Im miles away paddling in the sunshine? Thanks.

The Thule Hull-A-Port Carrier, # TH834, will fit on your 2012 Subaru Outback with a factory roof rack. This is one of our most popular kayak carriers, but this carrier does not have a locking mechanism to secure it to your roof rack. I have another option that you will be interested in.

I recommend looking at the Yakima JayLow J-Style Carrier, part # Y04073, with the Yakima Same Key System, part # Y07202. The locking system available for this kayak carrier will ensure that your kayak carrier will still be attached to your crossbars after a day on the water. The only other concern you may have is a thief removing the crossbars from your roof rack. Unfortunately we do not have a way to secure your factory crossbars to your roof rack. I have included a video demonstration and installation instructions for you to check out.

Both of these kayak carriers require a minimum crossbar spread of 24 inches. You will want to measure from the center of one crossbar to the center of the other and make sure you have a spread of at least 24 inches. It is also recommended to check the weight capacity of your roof in your owners manual so you do not exceed the recommended weight rating.
