Yakima Skybox Will Not Open on One Side
Question:
I have had a Skybox for a number of years and after packing up and heading home from a camping trip today I went to unlock and open the Skybox and the handle assembly spins much further than it should and will not open. At first, I could not even relock that side and remove the key, which I have since been able to do. However, I also cannot open the other side. I can unlock it but I cannot turn it to release the latch. It seems that if I apply any more pressure I may shear off the attachments as appears may have happened on the initial side. Any suggestions on how to get the box open and what may be done to repair it? Thanks

It is very difficult to diagnose what the issue may be without knowing a model number and seeing photos but it sounds like the latch on the locking mechanism on your RocketBox may have somehow been damaged. I would need to know the model number in order to get you any type of replacement parts but if you have a Yakima SkyBox 12 Rooftop Cargo Box # Y07334, for example, the replacement latch is the Replacement SuperLatch Handle Assemblies # Y8880348. I can't guarantee it but I would be willing to bet that new locking handle assemblies will fix the problem you are having, unless you can see something else inside the box which is causing interference. If you let me know your model number i may be able to find you the correct parts.

Hi I have a Yakima skybox and it has been in storage. I have opened it a year ago and decided to give it a good cleaning this fall and either sell it or use the dang thing. When I tried to open it the key won't even turn. This is happening on both sides. I can't find my second key so I am not sure if it is a latch or key issue. I don't even know if I will be able to replace the latch as how would I access the bits to take it apart if I can't open the box? I am wondering if I should first purchase a key but they may not be universal and therein lies the issue... Do you have any suggestions??
