Alternatives to Rear Suspension Systems for a 2004 Acura MDX Towing a 1999 Key West Boat Trailer

Question:

Will this work on my 2004 Acura MDX? I tow a 1999 dual console Key West boat. Total weight is around 2,500 pounds. Or do I need to go with a air compressor model? Thank you.

I spoke with my contact at Timbren and the Rear Suspension System, part # THROD2, has a weight capacity of 2000 lbs and will work on your 2004 Acura MDX as long as the tongue weight does not exceed the tongue weight capacity of the vehicle or trailer hitch. I assume the 1999 Key West boat trailer you have creates sag on the rear of your vehicle. I would recommend a weight distribution system over a rear suspension enhancement system in this situation.

I would recommend the Reese Trunnion Style Weight Distribution System Kit, part # RP66540, with the Reese Pole-Tongue Adapter, part # RP3280. This weight distribution hitch adds spring bars to the hitch system that apply leverage between the tow vehicle and the trailer. This leverage transfers the load sitting on the rear of the vehicle to all the axles of the vehicle and trailer. If you add a rear suspension enhancement system the extra weight is still sitting on the rear axle causing more strain. The weight distribution system itself is designed for A-frame style trailers and the adapter is needed for boat trailers that have the pole-tongue frame.

Before you purchase a weight distribution system it is important to know the tongue weight of your trailer. I have attached an article explaining weight distribution systems and how to verify your trailers tongue weight. It is very important that the tongue weight of your trailer does not exceed the tongue weight capacity of the weight distribution system, your trailer hitch or of your vehicle.
