Can GVWR of Trailer be Exceeded with Higher Rated Axles

Question:

Hello, If a 6’x12’ v-nose cargo trailer has two, 3,500lb axles, and a coupler rated at 14,000lb, is the trailer rated for 7,000lbs? Also why would the manufacturer build a tandem axle with a single axle gvwr weight of 1359kg on the vin tag and no brakes?

That does seem like a very odd set of equipment that you have on your trailer. The hard and fast rule is to not exceed the GVWR that is posted on the trailer. Since your trailer states 1359 kg (just under 3,000 lbs) I wouldn't exceed that even though you have higher rated axles and a higher rated coupler.

It is possible that the axles and coupler were the least rated component on your cargo trailer so by upgrading those parts the former owner was able to upgrade the GVWR of the trailer but that can only be confirmed by the manufacturer. Typically the frame is the lowest rated component which is why it's important not to exceed the GVWR.

The other possibility is that it used to be a single axle trailer but the second one was added just to help with stability and then the coupler was replaced and whoever replaced it just found one that at least met the GVWR and matched up with the trailer frame requirements.

If you are wanting to upgrade parts or you are trying to update the trailer I have attached a link to our selection of trailer products that you can filter through.
