Best 5th Wheel Hitch for Lifted 2016 Ram 2500 With Factory Prep Package

Question:

Best 5th wheel hitch for Ram 2500. I have 2016 Ram 2500 Diesel Crew Cab with 8 ft bed. I bought the truck as is and I was told all it has is a 2.5 leveling kit on the front of the truck and it has 37x12.5 tires on 18 rims. the tires are 36 inch tall and the side body is at 60 inch off the ground. I have the factory installed goose receiver and I purchased a BandW OEM ball and safety kit GNXA2062. I believe its taller than regular OEM would be? I am new to goose neck and 5th wheel pulling. Looking to purchase a Toy hauler and not sure about which set up I should use. Should I change to adapter or best to go with 5th wheel companion. I even saw one that slides over existing goose hitch.

Those are good questions and we can definitely help you out. First, let's start with the height, and as you can see by the accompanying diagram, you will need at least 5 to 6 inches above your rails and to the underside of the loft. You also need to make sure you are towing as level as possible. Due to this, you will need a hitch that has a low height setting, and the fact that your 2016 Ram 2500 has the factory prep package (which will have pucks in the bed) is great because inches matter in this case and not having to use rails will allow the hitch to sit lower.

The B&W Companion is undoubtedly a great 5th wheel hitch but the lowest its height setting can be is 17 inches, which is taller than most. Due to that I recommend the Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for Ram Towing Prep Package - 20,000 lbs # C16044. The A20 can be set to 14 inches high up to 18 inches high so it can be set low but can also be adjusted quite a bit.

The Curt A20 is also easy to use and has a very strong connection to your king pin. It has a handy indicator system which will let you know if the jaws on the hitch are ready to couple, uncouple or tow. This color-coded system makes the process of hooking up or disconnecting your trailer much simpler than most hitches. The interlocking jaw system is also very strong and means total contact with your king pin. This is important because it will result in a much more comfortable - and quieter - ride than if you used a lesser hitch.

If you do find your trailer needs more height in order to get level, there is an option for that too with an over/under conversion kit, which moves your trailer's leaf springs to the top of your axle and lifts your trailer approximately the same amount as your axle's diameter plus the height of the leaf spring pack. A 5th wheel trailer will likely have a 3" round axle so you would need Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-385-00.

Finally, if you need a 5th wheel wiring harness you can add one with the Curt 5th Wheel/Gooseneck Custom Wiring Harness w/ 7-Pole Connector # C56000.

I have added links to video reviews for you to take a look at as well. I know this is a lot of info so if you have any questions don't hesitate to let me know.
