Can etrailer.com A-Frame Trailer Coupler Be Adjusted

Question:

I’ve got a new flatbed car hauler that has a 2-5/16 coupler on it. When attached it’s really sloppy. With no weight on the trailer you feel it slamming back and forth the whole drive. Yes it’s the correct ball, and yes the hitch is solid with a locking mechanism so it doesn’t bounce or move side to side. Does the coupler have an adjustment underneath so you can tighten the couple on the ball? I see two bolts on the side of this one. Mine does not have any adjustments. If this one doesn’t what do you recommend?

Helpful Expert Reply:

The etrailer.com A-Frame Trailer Coupler # CA-5280-RB that you referenced does have a nice and convenient squeeze latch that allows for quick and safe coupling, but there aren't any adjustment points on the underside to tighten up a connection. Those bolts that you mentioned are just to hold the jaw in place.

We do not have a standard A-frame coupler that has the ability to adjust like this. If you are experiencing a lot of movement with your current setup there might be some rust or debris on the coupler that's preventing it from completely latching. If your trailer is equipped with brakes, I also recommend making sure they are engaging properly when coming to a stop.
