Will Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier Work on SUV
Question:
We have two vehicles and would like to be able to use either to carry our two lightweight kayaks using the same carrier. One is a pickup which this product is designed for but the other is a 2014 Mazda CX-9 SUV which has a 2inch trailer hitch that I purchased from you a couple of years ago. I dont see any reason why the Darby carrier wouldnt work on our SUV, with the front mount sitting on the roof with straps going through the top of the doors and the back mount fitted same as on a pickup. The extension bar height range looks like it will work fine with this large SUV. Of course the SUV rear door wouldnt open while the carrier is installed but this would just be for short trips. What do you think?

Yes, the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier # DTA944-968-924 that you referenced will work just fine on your 2014 Mazda CX-9. The hitch-mounted extension does have a height range of 53-3/8 inches to 60-3/8 inches so you can take a quick measurement of the roof height on your CX-9 just to be sure but I don't foresee this as being an issue.
Pickup trucks typically have smaller cab roofs to work with, making this a good and economical solution for supporting the extended length of kayaks. This is essentially why the system is marketed more towards this application. It will work great through for your CX-9 (and pickup truck)!
I have attached a short video demonstration that you can check out as well.
