How to use Yakima Dr. Tray Hitch Rack with 1-1/4 Shank in a 2 Hitch Receiver

Question:

I am trying to put Dr. Tray 1-1/4 into my 2inch hitch. Will Y8890342 work for that purpose? I am trying to utilize anti rattle shift but if I use any other adapter, it disables the function. Please advise.

After speaking with my contact at Yakima we determined that this adapter would not fit the Dr. Tray and they do not offer any type of adapter for the Dr. Tray since they provide it in the 2 different sized shanks. When I brought up using a hitch receiver adapter they mentioned concerns with the extended length that these adapters usually create from the actual hitch putting added stress on the shank of the Dr. Tray and potential bending of it over time.

Keeping that in mind, and trying not to extend the length too far away from your hitch, my recommendation is that you use something like the Brophy Hitch Reducer # HT02 which won't extend the connection as far away from the center of the hitch pin as a normal extension would. There is still going to be some added stress put on the shank of the Dr. Tray and these adapters typically will reduce the tongue weight of your hitch by 50%, but this will allow you to carry your 1-1/4" accessories in a 2" hitch receiver.

You may also want to add a locking hitch pin like # e98880 for some added security for your rack when attaching this to the hitch reducer.
