Should Center of Dual Axles be Located Where Single Axle Used to Exist for Trailer Axle Conversion

Question:

I would like to add a second axle to my 77 inch x 12 foot trailer. I know I have to remove existing hangers . But I am wondering, will I just put the center bracket above the center of the existing axle? Or do I need to recalculate everything? If so, How would you determine weights if the trailer hasnt been assembled yet with tandem axle? Or, Would you just use the 60/40 method? And if so, does this just include the load bearing bed of the trailer or do you calculate the tongue length into this as well?

Expert Reply:

You may be able to place the center bracket above where the existing axle sits but in all reality you need to recalculate everything to be on the safe side of things. You want to place the axles so that the tongue of your trailer is 10-15% of the weight of your trailer. We have the scale # e99044 that you can use to help you fine-tune this.

I have attached a photo from the linked helpful article on positioning trailer axles for you to check out. This is really just a trial and error basis to get everything in the correct location. Please note that adding a second axle won't necessarily increase the weight capacity of your trailer. Since the weakest component is the determining factor this could ultimately be your trailer frame. I recommend not loading the trailer over the current GVWR to ensure safe travels.
